Features: "Humanistic Shanghai" is a highly valuable book. In fact, it is a collection of two books: one part consists of pictures and captions from the pictorial album "Old Shanghai," supplemented by several articles by Dr. Li Tiangang. The entire book focuses on the community life of old Shanghai, summarizing the city's atmosphere before 1949. One of the main arguments in the book is that Shanghai once had a decent civil society and public spaces.
