Features: Socrates was incredibly ugly: his face was flat, as if it had been flattened by a pan; his lips were thick; his nose was flat, large, and upturned, a combination of a lion's nose and a hook-nose; his eyes were far apart, with the style of "Mianjianchi"; his eyes were bulging, with a fierce gaze; he had a big belly, not filled with fat but with tolerance and erudite knowledge. Perhaps Heaven created him with such a face to show people the true charm of a philosopher. Heaven is fair; since it bestowed upon him unparalleled wisdom and talent, it must take a cut from his appearance. Socrates' ugliness, like his philosophy, is renowned, but he was very charming to women and an expert in love. "Socrates' wife" is a term for a shrewish and bad wife. She was narrow-minded and stubborn, often making Socrates feel embarrassed. When others asked Socrates "Why did you marry such a woman?", he humorously replied, "A person skilled in horseback riding always chooses to ride fierce horses. Once they are accustomed to riding fierce horses, riding other horses becomes easy. If I can endure such a woman, there are probably no more difficult people in the world to get along with." If you are self-conscious about your appearance, draw closer to Socrates and discard the kind of self-consciousness that only petty people have, because it is of no benefit except to destroy your confidence.
