Features: Throughout history, many emperors and generals have created history amidst peace and war, success and failure, rise and decline. Whether praised or cursed, their virtues and vices, achievements and shortcomings, have left them immortal names or eternal condemnation. They are both admirable and loathsome, respected and detested—controversial figures whose reputations are sealed upon their death. History deserves reverence. Why? Because learning from the past grants invaluable wisdom; why fear it? Because repeating past mistakes invites historical punishment. To ascend the throne and satisfy their desires for power, emperors throughout the ages have resorted to hidden means or cunning strategies. This book reveals the intricate political machinations of China's five thousand-year imperial history, exposing and analyzing the emperors' various schemes and maneuvers. It enables us to discern the merits and demerits of these rulers dialectically, separating the essence from the dross.
