Obesity is predicted to be an epidemic in the 21st century and a killer of human health. Currently, obesity is trending globally. It is estimated that by 2010, there will be 130 million obese people in the entire Asia-Pacific region, with 22.4% of the population in China being overweight and 3.01% being obese. Experts warn that the number of obese patients in China may have exceeded 70 million. Although the obesity rate in China is much lower than that in Western populations (generally around 20% in Europe and America), the growth rate is relatively fast, especially in the late 1990s. The incidence of overweight and obesity in China's population shows a certain pattern: the north is higher than the south; large cities are higher than medium and small cities; medium and small cities are higher than rural areas; and developed regions are higher than underdeveloped regions. Clearly, overweight and obesity are closely related to economic development, living standards, and lifestyles.
Obesity not only affects physical appearance but also brings inconvenience to life, and more importantly, it easily causes various complications, accelerates aging, and shortens life expectancy. Medical statistics show that if a person over 45 years old weighs more than the normal standard by 10%, their lifespan will be reduced by 29 days for every 0.5 kilograms over the standard. The World Health Organization's Obesity Society has called on obesity to be recognized as both an independent disease and a risk factor for type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, hypertension, stroke, and certain cancers, with its harmfulness being four times that of smoking. Recently, the International Obesity Conference reported that the number of deaths worldwide due to obesity is more than twice that due to hunger, and therefore obesity has been listed by the World Health Organization as one of the top ten risk factors contributing to the burden of disease.
Overweight and obesity have become a serious health issue threatening the health and quality of life of the Chinese people. Paying attention to health means staying away from obesity. How can we stay away from obesity? First, through scientific diet and increased physical activity, the overweight population should return to a normal state and prevent overweight individuals from becoming obese. If preventive and intervention measures are taken in a timely manner, it is entirely possible to slow down the rise in the incidence of overweight and obesity, which is of great significance for controlling chronic diseases.
Controlling diet does not mean starvation, but rather choosing a reasonable diet—in short, learning to eat scientifically. Eat fruits, vegetables, poultry, fish, eggs, and meat that have weight-loss effects. If you are not yet familiar with these, please read this book, because the main purpose of this book is—Follow me eat, you will not become obese.
