The collection "Studies on Korean Yangming Thought from Ganghwa" includes seventeen essays and three appendices. It is a comprehensive monograph in the field of Chinese academia that discusses the Yangming scholar Zheng Qidou of the 18th century. It holds special significance in the study of Confucianism in East Asia for pioneering new research areas. Before Zheng Qidou, Korea had Yangming scholars, but they did not develop a systematic theoretical framework of Yangming thought. Zheng Qidou was a significant Yangming scholar in 18th-century Korea, and his thought and its position in the history of Confucianism were long overlooked. This was partly because of the unparalleled status and influence of Zhu Xi's thought in Korea, which overshadowed Yangming thought, but also because Zheng Qidou's collected works, "Xagujik," were not published until the 1970s and 1980s. The essays included in this book were presented at the international academic symposium "The Positioning of the Ganghwa Yangming School and Its Modern Significance," held in Ganghwa, Korea, on October 15–16, 2004.
