Chen Clan Ancestral Hall

The Chen Clan Ancestral Hall, also known as the "Chen Clan Academy," is located on Zhongshan 7th Road in Guangzhou, Guangdong Province. Its construction was initiated in 1888 (the 14th year of the Guangxu reign of the Qing Dynasty) and completed in 1893. It stands as one of the largest existing traditional Cantonese structures and is widely acclaimed as the "Pearl of Lingnan Architectural Art" for being the best-preserved and most exquisitely decorated ancestral hall of its kind in China.

The complex follows a layout of three axes and three entrances, comprising nine halls and six courtyards. It covers a land area of 15,000 square meters, with a floor area of 8,000 square meters. The hall represents the pinnacle of Lingnan architectural decoration. Almost every part of the structure—including halls, courtyards, corridors, doors, windows, railings, walls, roof ridges, and beams—showcases superb craftsmanship. This includes the famous "Three Carvings, Two Moldings, One Casting, and One Painting" techniques: wood carving, brick carving, stone carving, pottery molding, stucco molding, copper and iron casting, as well as colored paintings and murals.

As a masterpiece of traditional Lingnan architecture, the Chen Clan Ancestral Hall is a tangible embodiment of Cantonese ancestral hall culture. It serves as a historical and cultural calling card for Guangzhou and is a must-visit destination for anyone looking to understand the city and its traditional architectural art. Today, it is a popular cultural tourist attraction and also houses the Guangdong Folk Art Museum.

In terms of recognition, it was listed as a Major Historical and Cultural Site Protected at the National Level by the State Council in 1988. In 2002, it was named one of the "Eight Sights of Yangcheng in the New Century." In 2008, the Guangdong Folk Art Museum, housed within the hall, was rated as a National AAAA Tourist Attraction. Most recently, in March 2022, it was selected as one of the first batches of Civilized Tourism Demonstration Units in Guangzhou.
