Features: This book is designed for candidates preparing for the PETS Level exam. Level 1 is the initial level among the five levels of the National English Proficiency Test (NEPT), equivalent to the English proficiency after completing nine years of compulsory education. The book consists of 15 units, each divided into five parts:
Part 1: Speaking
This section provides oral practice, featuring several dialogues designed according to the functional and notional syllabus of the PETS Level exam. The dialogues revolve around the unit topics and list common sentence patterns. The exercises are diverse and progressive, aiming to help students achieve free communication.
Part 2: Listening
This section focuses on unit themes and includes exercises such as listening to recordings to select appropriate responses, listening to short passages and filling in blanks, etc.
Part 3: Reading
This section supplements or extends the content of the unit dialogues, including two passages. The first is the main passage, and the second is the supplementary passage. The main passage consists of four parts: text, vocabulary list, annotations, and exercises. The annotations highlight doubts and difficulties in grammar and vocabulary, providing Chinese translations for reference to deepen candidates' understanding of the text. The exercises are designed to focus on key content, including text comprehension, vocabulary practice, and structure practice. Vocabulary practice aims to help candidates deepen their understanding of English vocabulary, expand their vocabulary, and enrich their usage; structure practice aims to help candidates master some common English sentence patterns to improve their language proficiency. The supplementary passage consists of a text and reading comprehension questions.
Part 4: Grammar
This section is arranged according to the grammar syllabus of the PETS Level exam and the grammar involved in the passages. It includes grammar explanations and exercises, with the exercises primarily in subjective format.
Part 5: Guided Writing
This section briefly introduces writing skills, including formats, common expressions, and sample texts, along with corresponding writing exercises.
Additionally, the book includes seven self-assessment tests and one mock test. The self-assessment tests have question types consistent with the actual exam but slightly fewer in quantity. The mock test is accompanied by an oral test, with difficulty, ability requirements, and key assessment points close to those of the actual PETS Level 1 exam. This allows candidates to assess their listening, speaking, reading, and writing abilities, as well as their mastery of relevant language knowledge, so they can identify and address issues promptly, filling gaps and reinforcing weak areas.
At the end of this textbook, there are transcripts of the listening recordings and reference answers to the exercises.
