Features: English Interpreting Basics (Level B) is the initial stage for advancing to intermediate and advanced English interpreting skills. The language requirements are slightly lower than those for English Interpreting Basics (Level A), designed to enable learners to acquire the necessary skills in a shorter period, thereby preparing them for further participation in English interpreting proficiency assessments. To work as an interpreter, learners must develop comprehensive language skills in listening, speaking, reading, writing, and translation, while also strengthening their training in English oral and interpreting abilities. In the process of implementing the intermediate and advanced English interpreting certification exam, the authors found that many candidates failed the stage of the written exam primarily due to weaknesses in listening and translation skills, as well as a narrow knowledge base. Those who failed the second stage of the oral exam were mostly unable to express themselves fluently in English and lacked the corresponding interpreting skills. To enable English enthusiasts to effectively and comprehensively improve their English proficiency and eventually work as interpreters, the Shanghai Foreign Language Interpreting Examination Committee began piloting the "Shanghai English Interpreting Basics Certificate (Level A)" exam in 2002. This exam forms a complete series from low to high, aligning with the intermediate and advanced English interpreting exams, thereby establishing a corresponding platform for training and assessment at these three different levels.
