Couplets are a specialty of China. The popularity of couplets began with the peach symbols of the Five Dynasties period, and the couplet inscribed by Meng Chang of Later Shu on New Year's Eve, "New Year accepts remaining blessings, auspicious festival calls for eternal spring," is considered the oldest.
