Features: The revised and supplemented edition has been published for five years. During this period, the patient cases I encountered in the clinic have changed. The cases of anxiety disorders (previously diagnosed as neurosis) combined with depression discussed in Chapter 2 of this book have increased compared to the past. Five years ago, to distinguish between the two, I emphasized the differential diagnosis as a key point. However, over these five years, through basic and clinical research on anxiety and depression, it has become clear that both are caused by "5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) neurofunctional deficiency in the brain's emotional regulation system." With the advent of new-generation antidepressants SSRIs, they have become the first-line effective treatment for both "anxiety disorders" and "mood disorders." From a historical perspective, in 1960, anti-anxiety drugs were used for "anxiety disorders," while antidepressants were used for "mood disorders." Now, both are treated with antidepressants like SSRIs. In other words, the order of treatment drug selection has changed. This book has once again addressed "female depression." Research has found that female-specific depression patients often have estrogen deficiency. Estrogen enhances the function of the brain's 5-HT nerves. In the treatment of female depression, SSRIs are often used in combination with estrogen. Many female depression patients are reluctant to take antidepressants. In such cases, how should treatment be conducted? I will explain this in Chapter 8. This book aims to provide reference for depression patients and their families, doctors involved in treatment, clinical psychologists, nurses, rehabilitation doctors, and other professionals.
