Author: Zhang Xianqing, Editor-in-Chief
Publisher:
Publishing Date: 2003-09-01
Features: The compilation and publication of Sun Qifeng Collected Works is another significant achievement in the field of ancient texts. This is because Sun Qifeng was a renowned scholar, thinker, educator, and patriotic figure during the Ming and Qing dynasties. In terms of his status and influence in the intellectual and cultural spheres of his time, he even surpassed the three great figures of the late Ming and early Qing dynasties, Gu Yanwu, Huang Zongxi, and Wang Fuzhi, as revered by modern scholars. Therefore, it is highly necessary to organize and study his works.
Sun Qifeng (1584–1675), styled Qitai, styled Zhongyuan, and self-named Shenhuan Laoren in his later years, was also known as Mr. Xiaheng. He was a famous scholar and thinker during the late Ming and early Qing dynasties, revered by northern scholars as a towering figure. The entire work comprises 3.05 million words, including seven collections of treatises and essays: three works on Confucian classics, two on history, one academic monograph, three collections of essays, two volumes of Biography of Sun Xiaofeng, Zhang Xianqing's modern work A Biography of Sun Qifeng, and compiled Prefaces, Postfaces, and Annals of Sun's Works. Sun Qifeng's three works on Confucian classics are Essentials of Reading the Book of Changes, Guidance on the Book of Documents, Guidance on the Four Books, and Late Years' Annotations on the Guidance on the Four Books. The Genealogy of Neo-Confucianism is Sun Qifeng's masterpiece. His two historical works are Biography of Figures in Central Plains and Biography of Figures in Jili. Collected Works of Mr. Xiaheng, Daily Chronicle, and Travel Chronicle are all manuscripts by Sun Qifeng.
1. The book includes nine works of Sun (including one collection of essays), generally published in volumes according to categories.
2. To facilitate a comprehensive understanding of Sun's life and thought, a postscript by Zhang Xianqing titled A Biography of Sun Qifeng is appended, along with the Biography of Mr. Xiaheng compiled by his disciples Tang Bin and Geng Ji, as well as prefaces, postfaces, and annals of Sun's works (excluding his self-preface).
3. For ease of reading and reference, only a "General Index" is provided at the beginning, with detailed bibliographic entries placed in the preface.
4. The book focuses on punctuation and textual criticism, supplemented by brief "Annotations," with obvious errors or taboo words corrected directly in the text without separate annotation.
