Statistical Physics of Equilibrium-(English Photocopy Edition)-Second Edition

Features: This textbook is specifically designed to meet the professional needs of graduate students and advanced undergraduate students in physics, chemistry, and materials science. As early as 1980, the authors discovered that after K.G. Wilson pioneered the introduction and successful application of the renormalization group method to critical phenomena, research in condensed matter physics entered a golden age of rapid development. Therefore, they believed that the early teaching of graduate students should reflect this dynamic. To this end, in 1989, Prentice-Hall Publishing Company was the first to publish "Equilibrium Statistical Physics," which reflected these characteristics. In 1994, it was revised and published by World Scientific as this edition. In 1999, the second edition was published, and now presented to the readers is the 2003 version. The book is divided into 11 chapters. The first two chapters review thermodynamics and statistical system theory. This part serves as both the foundation for readers to study the later chapters and is designed for students who have not been exposed to thermodynamics and statistical physics during their undergraduate studies. Both chapters contain a large number of exercises to help readers deepen their understanding. The subsequent chapters cover topics such as mean-field theory and Landau theory, dense gases and liquids, the two-dimensional Ising model of critical phenomena, series expansions, scaling laws, and the renormalization group method. Chapter 7 introduces dynamic simulation methods. Chapters 8, 9, 10, and 11 discuss the active application areas of statistical physics: polymers and thin films, quantum fluids, linear response theory, disordered systems, etc. Since the latter half of the book involves the concept of second quantization, the content of the occupation number representation is supplemented in the appendix. Each chapter of the book includes numerous exercises, with increasing difficulty as the chapters progress.
