In the nearly half-century since the study of linguistics abroad has advanced rapidly, various theories and models have emerged in core linguistic disciplines (phonology, syntax, semantics, etc.), while at the same time, interdisciplinary integration has given rise to a series of marginal disciplines (psycholinguistics, sociolinguistics, applied linguistics, etc.). The compilation and publication of this series aim to provide readers with foundational readings on the theories and application principles of both aspects, contributing modestly to the popularization of linguistics and applied linguistics knowledge, as well as promoting language learning, research, and teaching. Linguistics and applied linguistics are among the courses commonly offered in language departments of universities and colleges in China, particularly in foreign language programs. Due to the development and innovation of contemporary linguistics, the traditional content of linguistic disciplines has no longer met the needs of teaching. This series serves as a textbook to fill this gap. The series will be published in volumes, with the first volume dedicated to readers consisting of six specialized collections. The series also plans to introduce other related disciplines of linguistics and applied linguistics in the future. By mastering the knowledge and application principles introduced in each collection, readers may conduct experiments and research in line with China's actual conditions, explore the patterns of language learning and mastery among Chinese students (especially in foreign languages), and thereby promote language teaching reform in China. The compilers of this series have been engaged in teaching various disciplines of linguistics and applied linguistics for many years, possessing teaching experience and research achievements. They are willing to share their expertise and insights with students in language departments of universities and colleges (especially foreign language programs), as well as secondary school Chinese and foreign language teachers, translators, and general language professionals and enthusiasts. We sincerely hope to receive guidance, criticism, and support from experts, scholars, and in the fields of linguistics and applied linguistics.
