Pan Guangdan was a renowned modern Chinese eugenicist, sociologist, ethnologist, and translator, with a wide-ranging academic scope that bridged East and West, and integrated humanities and sciences. Many of his works have become classics of modern Chinese scholarship. His lifetime writings and translations total approximately 6 million words, most of which are compiled in the 14-volume Collected Works of Pan Guangdan. He was also one of the early leaders of the China Democratic League and the Yunnan Democratic Movement. Professor Fei Xiaotong once said of Pan Guangdan: "This generation of scholars, like Pan, did not seek fame or profit. They believed that dedicating themselves to society was the only way to justify their existence. Their fame was given to them, not earned. They wrote not for reputation or to impress others, but to solve real problems. This was their own 'need'."
The author of this book is a sociology doctoral graduate who has studied Pan Guangdan for many years. He hopes to share with readers the spiritual pursuit and brilliant life of this remarkable scholar.
