Features: The Essentials of Governance During the Zhenguan Era is a ten-volume, forty-chapter work compiled by Wu Jing of the Tang Dynasty. It is a political document that records the discussions between the emperor and his ministers during the twenty-three years of Emperor Taizong's reign. Wu Jing was a native of Junyi (the seat of which is now Kaifeng, Henan) in Bianzhou, Tang Dynasty. He was born in the first year of the Xianheng era of Emperor Gaozong of Tang (670) and died in the eighth year of the Tianbao era of Emperor Xuanzong of Tang (749). In his youth, he was determined to pursue knowledge and became proficient in classics and history. During the Chang'an era of Empress Wu Zetian, Wei Yuanzhong and Zhu Jingze held high ministerial positions and recommended Wu Jing's historical talent. As a result, he was able to enter the Historiography Bureau and contribute to the compilation of the national history. Over nearly two decades, he participated in the compilation of The Veritable Records of Empress Wu Zetian, The Veritable Records of Emperor Zhongzong, The Veritable Records of Emperor Ruizong, and various National Histories of the Tang Dynasty. He found the histories of the Five Dynasties of Liang, Chen, Qi, and Sui to be overly complex, so he compiled ten volumes each of the histories of Liang, Qi, and Zhou, five volumes of the history of Chen, and twenty volumes of the history of Sui. He also wrote The Book of Tang and The Spring and Autumn Annals of Tang. Primarily focusing on the histories of the dynasties close to the Tang in time and the contemporary history, he dedicated his life to the study of history. However, most of his writings have not been passed down, and only The Essentials of Governance During the Zhenguan Era is currently in circulation.
