Features: Wenzhou, historically known as Dong'ou, boasts a long history. Since the Song Dynasty, it has been a cradle of renowned scholars and a hub of cultural excellence, with local literature collections surpassing those in southeastern Zhejiang. The Wenzhou Library preserves a vast number of manuscripts, handwritten copies, and printed works, while the Wenzhou Museum and other institutions have accumulated many valuable documents. In the process of building a modern Wenzhou, the rescue and development of historical and cultural heritage, as well as the appreciation of the rich legacy left by predecessors, are shared aspirations of the city's academic and cultural community. In modern times, Wenzhou has conducted four large-scale efforts to organize its literature. During the Tongzhi and Guangxu periods of the Qing Dynasty, Sun Yiyan of Rui'an compiled the Yongjia Congshu (Yongjia Anthology), consisting of fifteen works and 252 volumes. In 1915 (the fourth year of the Republic of China), Mao Guangsheng of Rugao edited and published the Yongjia Shixue Sichang Congke (Yongjia Poets' Feichang Anthology), comprising fourteen works and 22 volumes. In the 1920s and 1930s, Huang Qun of Yongjia published the Jingxiang Lou Congshu (Jingxiang Tower Anthology), which included thirty-eight works and 289 volumes. Before the outbreak of the War of Resistance, the Yongjia District Committee for Collecting the Writings of Local Scholars compiled and copied 402 works and 1,259 volumes of local literature, significantly benefiting academia.
Purpose of the Wenzhou Literature Series: In line with Comrade Jiang Zemin's "Three Represents" important thought and the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China's "Guidelines for the Collection and Preservation of Chinese Ancient Books," the series adheres to the principles of "serving the people and serving socialism" and "letting a hundred flowers bloom and letting a hundred schools of thought contend." It promotes the pragmatic academic tradition of the Yongjia School, aims to enhance cultural refinement and academic atmosphere, and actively advances the development of material and spiritual civilization in Wenzhou. It provides a comprehensive and innovative collection of basic Wenzhou local literature for researchers, cultural workers, and university students, serving as a reference for reading, analysis, and research. While striving to produce high-quality works, the series also seeks to cultivate young scholars dedicated to cultural causes, academic norms, and the preservation of literature, achieving the dual goal of publishing books and nurturing talent.
Requirements for the series:
(1) Works included must be related to Wenzhou or authored by Wenzhou natives in terms of content.
(2) The geographical scope is based on modern administrative divisions, including Lucheng, Wenhai, and Longwan districts, Ruian and Yueqing cities, and Yongjia, Pingyang, Cangnan, Wencheng, Taishun, and Dongtou counties.
(3) The publication date must be before 1949, with occasional exceptions for specific topics.
(4) The content focuses primarily on important ancient historical and literary sources in literature, history, philosophy, and science and technology.
(5) The process prioritizes the rescue and preservation of manuscripts, handwritten copies, and rare books, while also organizing collected essays and scattered materials. Works with national influence, high academic value, and originality are given priority.
(6) The editing process includes collation, punctuation, annotations, and prefaces, with appendices compiled. Rigor and precision are required, with earlier and more accurate editions chosen as the basis. The original titles, volumes, and text should be respected, and sources or locations of the materials should be noted.
