Features: In recent years, readers in China have shown increasing interest in American literature. English departments in various universities have established courses on selected readings in American literature and related subjects. However, many selected reading textbooks often begin with the 19th century or earlier, whereas American literature rose to prominence in the 20th century, especially after World War II, and became dominant in the world literary scene. For this reason, we decided to compile a separate textbook on 20th-century American literature, providing a resource for teachers to use as an elective course material, as well as helping senior students and graduate students understand the development of contemporary and modern American literature and the trajectory of American society and culture. This will not only broaden their knowledge but also enhance their appreciation of literature, cultivate their ability to analyze and research issues, and lay a foundation for writing graduation theses. During the compilation process, we followed the following principles: First, in selecting writers, we included those who have already become classics, such as the novelists Hemingway, Faulkner, and Fitzgerald, as well as the poets Pound, Williams, and Stevens. Second, considering the diverse development of American literature, the writers we selected not only hold a certain position in literary history but also represent various themes, techniques, styles, races, and genders. Third, we believe that a good textbook should not be all-encompassing or try to do everything, but rather should serve as a guide, leaving ample space for teachers and students to think and explore.
