Features: This book is one of the "Treasures in the Golden House Series," providing a concise discussion on the origins of the "Four Treasures of the Study" (brush, ink, paper, and inkstone) and the "Seven Treasures" (such as ink slabs and brush rests), their characteristics in different eras, the collecting histories of various individuals, and price comparisons across different periods. It fully demonstrates the preserved value of these treasures that have survived to this day, making it an accessible and specialized guide for collectors. The term "wenfang" (study) was historically used to refer to the office where officials managed documents, as well as the study of scholars. It also serves as an abbreviation for brush, ink, paper, and inkstone. For example, in the Mengliang Lu by Wu Zimou of the Song Dynasty (Volume 3, "Scholars Taking Examinations"): "Scholars are only allowed to carry 'wenfang' and examination papers; nothing else is permitted." It was said that in the past, the study was a sacred place, forbidden to women, located a hundred paces away from living quarters, where they could not hear the crowing of chickens or the barking of dogs. This explains the saying, "Let the ears not hear the affairs outside the window, and let the heart focus solely on studying the classics." Scholars dominated the study, just as a female embroiderer dominates her embroidery. The items used in the study each had their own unique characteristics, carefully selected by individuals. As a result, the arrangement of the study reflected distinct styles. The "Four Treasures of the Study" (brush, ink, paper, and inkstone) can be likened to irreplaceable core elements; how could the "Four Elegant Arts" (qin, chess, calligraphy, and painting) be taken lightly? Moreover, the myriad "Four Graceful Treasures" (brush holder, brush stand, ink dropper, and brush rack), as well as tables, chairs, and accessories, were all meticulously crafted, showcasing individuality, knowledge, and creativity. They also reflect the inner world and taste of scholars when they are alone.
