Features: Jiang Fan (1761-1830), styled Ziping, Jiefu, and known as Zhengtang, was a native of Ganquan (Yangzhou) in the Qing Dynasty. He was a renowned Confucian scholar who participated in compiling the Imperial Qing Confucian Exegesis and the Comprehensive Gazetteer of Guangdong. Jiang Fan's most famous works include Record of Han Learning Masters of the Current Dynasty, a eight-volume compilation featuring biographies of 56 Qing Dynasty Confucian scholars, and Record of the Origin of Song Learning of the Current Dynasty, a two-volume work chronicling the lives of 40 Qing scholars who delved deeper into the study or admiration of Song Learning. Among these, Record of Han Learning Masters of the Current Dynasty, as a Confucian history centered on master scholars, accurately grasps the key features of Qing Dynasty Han Learning and comprehensively explores the academic origins, master-disciple relationships, academic principles, representative figures, and achievements and shortcomings of the textual research school in the mid-Qing period. It reflects the highest achievements of textual research studies at the time, particularly highlighting the accomplishments of Confucian studies. It is the earliest monograph to provide a comprehensive summary and evaluation of Qing Dynasty Han Learning and was selected by Hu Shih as part of the Minimum Basic Bibliography of Chinese Classics. Although an edited version of the book already exists, it still contains inaccuracies. In light of this, the editor of this book has dedicated over a decade to meticulously examining, annotating, and organizing the versions, origins, figures, historical facts, and institutional systems of Record of Han Learning Masters of the Current Dynasty. The publication of this book holds significant academic value for the study of Record of Han Learning Masters of the Current Dynasty, as well as for research on Qing Dynasty scholarship and academic history.
