Publish Date: 2000-10-01
Features: What is history? How should we view history? What is the interactive relationship among the history people experience, the history written by historians, and the mythologized history? This book takes the Boxer Movement as an example to explore and explain the above questions: The first part is the historical facts of the Boxer Movement as depicted by historians, primarily narrative-based; the second part examines the thoughts, feelings, and behaviors of various Chinese and foreign participants directly involved in the Boxer Movement, pointing out that their perspectives on the events unfolding differed greatly from the views of later historians who reconstructed history; the third part reviews the various myths about the Boxer Movement that emerged in China in the early 20th century. The author believes that among the three different approaches to understanding history, the latter two have greater persuasiveness and influence on ordinary readers. As the Boxer Movement in the context of time, it represents a special interpretation of the past; as the Boxer Movement in the context of myth, it represents a special interpretation of the present carried by the past, which still has a profound impact on the present.
