Features: To promote the excellent culture of our motherland, we have selected this book, featuring three outstanding Zen poems from ancient monks and literati, translated, annotated, and analyzed. The aim is to compile the essence of ancient Zen poetry, providing a rich and diverse collection of Zen poems for enthusiasts and general readers. Part of the poems are Zen philosophy poems, including general Buddhist poems, as well as unique Chinese Zen sect poems such as dharma-teaching poems, enlightenment poems, and contemplative poems. The characteristic of this part of Zen poems is their rich philosophy and wisdom. Indeed, promoting Buddhist principles is promoting idealism. The other part reflects the lives of monks and literati in their practice and enlightenment, such as mountain-dwelling poems, temple poems, and traveling poems. The main feature of this part of Zen poems is their portrayal of the empty, clear, tranquil, silent, and sacred Zen realm and mindset. Most of the Zen poems selected in this book are renowned masterpieces with exceptional artistic expression. For example, some Zen philosophy poems are witty poems that skillfully use metaphors. Some mountain-dwelling and temple poems are landscapes that blend scenery and emotion, subtle and profound, rich in artistic conception, with moving artistic charm and value. The format of this book is briefly described as follows:
1. The selected Zen poems are arranged in chronological order according to the birth and death dates of the authors, without distinguishing between monks or literati or their poetic styles. The book includes 300 poems by 108 authors.
2. The main text of the book is divided into four parts: author introductions, annotations, modern translations, and brief analyses. Author introductions, annotations, and analyses are concise and to the point. The analysis section focuses on interpreting the Zen philosophy, as it involves many Buddhist allusions and terms, which are appropriately explained. Due to the complexity and difficulty of some Zen poems, modern translations are provided to aid in comprehension. However, the translation is not merely mechanical but aims to create vivid and readable new poems, meeting the criteria of faithfulness, expressiveness, and elegance. Nevertheless, translating ancient poetry into modern language is a challenging task. Although the author has explored it for many years, the pursuit of excellence remains ongoing.
