Onto and Afield -- Night-Light Cup Literary Works

Author: Liu Qi

Features: "Beyond the Physical and the Abstract," as I whimsically coined it. I looked up the original text of the I Ching: "That which is above the form is called the Way; that which is below the form is called the vessel." I was delighted. Vaguely, I felt that the abstract is more ethereal, while the concrete is more substantial. One ethereal, one substantial, one above, one below—everything is encompassed within. As I thought, the words "Beyond the Physical and the Abstract" out in my mind. The vessel contains the Way, the Way envelops the vessel, the Way and the vessel are one, complete. Some articles in the book were published sporadically in Yeguangbei before the column started; others were published in other newspapers and magazines. All these articles are of varying lengths and styles, so I can't say whether this is an essay collection, a miscellany, or something else. I can only broadly say that this is a collection of articles. Additionally, there are dozens of illustrations, which were painstakingly drawn for the book. But whatever the case, I think the words "Beyond the Physical and the Abstract" can encompass everything.
