Features: This dictionary is primarily aimed at middle and primary school students as well as general members of the public, designed to meet the needs of language learning. The dictionary selects commonly misused characters and provides detailed analysis from aspects such as meaning, grammar, pronunciation, and usage, identifying the reasons behind common errors to enhance the ability to use Chinese characters correctly. Our middle and primary school Chinese teaching has always placed great emphasis on improving students' recognition and application of Chinese characters. Learning Chinese language requires correct usage of characters, words, sentences, paragraphs, and passages, with the foundation lying in characters and words. Without a proper understanding of these two basic units—characters and words—it is difficult to effectively master larger linguistic units such as sentences, paragraphs, and passages. Due to some inherent characteristics of the Chinese language, such as the lack of extensive morphological features, relatively simple grammatical forms, a high proportion of monosyllabic words, and a prevalence of compound words based on monosyllabic morphemes, the connection between Chinese characters and vocabulary is particularly close. As a result, character teaching has gone beyond the mere study of shapes and is closely linked to vocabulary learning. This is the reason why we chose to focus on characters and words when planning supplementary materials for middle and primary school Chinese teaching.
The Character and Word Analysis Dictionary consists of six volumes, three of which are about single characters, and the other three are about compound words. Improving the understanding and application of Chinese characters and words is a long-term need for individual language learning, making this series of reference books helpful for the general public as well. Emphasizing foundational and common usage is the principle behind compiling this series of reference books. To this end, we have made the following efforts:
1. Topic Selection: The six volumes represent six topics. The three volumes on single characters address issues related to reading, writing, and usage, while the three volumes on compound words focus on meaning, pronunciation, and similar/same forms, as well as easily confused and misused words. These six topics are both foundational and important in Chinese language learning.
2. Selection of Analyzed Characters and Words: The analyzed characters are limited to the commonly used range, with single characters primarily selected from the 2,500 most frequently used characters and 1,000 less frequently used characters, with some general characters also included. The selection of compound words is based on the findings of lexical measurement research. For example, synonyms are mainly chosen based on the data from the Modern Chinese Frequency Dictionary, with a focus on approximately 8,548 commonly used words. The selection of near-sound words prioritizes those with high frequency, identical or similar pronunciation, but distinct meanings, including those that are easily confused between dialectal and standard Mandarin pronunciations. For variant forms, the selection and analysis are conducted using a large-scale corpus containing billions of characters, ensuring greater objectivity and accuracy.
3. Presentation of Character and Word Knowledge: Instead of aiming for comprehensiveness, the focus is on analyzing easily confused and misused aspects. Traditional dictionaries and reference books often focus on individual characters and words, striving for complete and thorough definitions. However, to gain a deep and correct understanding of a character or word, it is essential to understand its neighboring words and the subtle differences between them, thereby mastering their distinct usages. Providing this information and assistance is precisely what this series of reference books aims to convey to readers.
4. Definition and Analysis: Efforts are made to use simple and accessible language to achieve the goal of "making the profound accessible."
