Features: This dictionary is primarily aimed at middle and primary school students as well as general members of the public, designed to meet the needs of language learning. It analyzes and clarifies easily misread characters, combining explanations of phonetics, semantics, and grammar with simple and easy-to-understand example sentences. This helps readers understand the reasons behind misreadings and provides correct pronunciations. It serves to supplement classroom teaching, broaden horizons, and firmly master the pronunciation of commonly used characters, thereby improving the ability to use Chinese. The dictionary includes 1,433 entries, divided into 645 groups.
Our middle and primary school Chinese teaching places great emphasis on improving the recognition and application abilities of Chinese characters. Learning Chinese requires the correct use of characters, words, sentences, paragraphs, and passages, with the foundation being characters and words. Without a proper understanding of these two basic units—characters and words—it is difficult to effectively master larger linguistic units such as sentences, paragraphs, and passages. Due to some inherent characteristics of Chinese, such as the lack of extensive morphological features, relatively simple grammatical forms, a prevalence of monosyllabic words, and a focus on compound words based on monosyllabic morphemes, the connection between Chinese characters and vocabulary is particularly close. As a result, character teaching has gone beyond the mere study of shapes and is closely linked to vocabulary learning. This is why we chose to focus on characters and words first when planning supplementary materials for middle and primary school Chinese teaching.
The Character and Word Analysis Dictionary consists of six volumes, three of which are about single characters, and the other three are about compound words. Improving the understanding and application of Chinese characters and words is a long-term need for individual language learning, so this series of reference books will also be helpful to the general public. Emphasizing fundamental and commonly used knowledge is the principle behind the compilation of this series, and we have made efforts in the following aspects:
1. Topic Selection: The six volumes represent six topics. The three volumes on single characters address issues of reading, writing, and usage, while the three volumes on compound words address issues of meaning, pronunciation, and similar/same forms, as well as easily confused and mistaken words. These six topics are both fundamental and important in Chinese language learning.
2. Scope of Analyzed Words: The words analyzed are limited to commonly used ones. Single characters are primarily selected from the 2,500 most commonly used characters and 1,000 less commonly used characters, with some general characters also included. Compound words are selected as much as possible based on the findings of lexical research. For example, synonyms are primarily chosen based on the usage frequency data from the Modern Chinese Frequency Dictionary, generally falling within the range of 8,548 commonly used words. The selection of near-sound words focuses on those that are highly common, have the same or similar pronunciation but different meanings, and are easily confused, including those with differences between dialectal and standard Mandarin pronunciations. For variant forms, the selection and analysis are conducted objectively and accurately by comparing the correct and variant forms in a large-scale corpus containing billions of characters.
3. Presentation of Word Knowledge: Instead of aiming for comprehensiveness, the focus is on analyzing easily confused and mistaken aspects. Most general dictionaries and encyclopedias focus on individual characters and words, striving for complete and thorough definitions. However, to gain an in-depth understanding and correct use of a character or word, it is necessary to understand the words adjacent to it and the subtle differences between them, thereby mastering their different usages. Providing this information and assistance is precisely what this series of reference books aims to convey to readers.
4. Definition and Analysis: Whenever possible, popular and simple language is used to achieve the goal of "making the profound accessible."
