Our middle and primary school language teaching has always placed great emphasis on improving the ability to recognize and use Chinese characters. Learning Chinese language requires correct application of characters, words, sentences, paragraphs, and passages, with the foundation lying in characters and words. Without a proper understanding of these two basic units—characters and words—it is difficult to effectively master larger linguistic units such as sentences, paragraphs, and passages. Due to some inherent characteristics of the Chinese language, such as the lack of extensive morphological features, relatively simple grammatical forms, a prevalence of monosyllabic words, and a focus on compound words based on monosyllabic morphemes, the connection between Chinese characters and vocabulary is particularly close. As a result, character teaching has gone beyond the mere realm of pure form and is closely linked to vocabulary learning. This is the reason why we chose to focus on characters and words first when planning supplementary materials for middle and primary school language teaching.
The Dictionary of Character and Word Analysis consists of six volumes, three of which are dedicated to single characters, and the other three to compound words. Improving the understanding and application of Chinese characters and words is a long-term need for language learning, making this series of reference books helpful for the general public as well. Emphasizing foundational and common usage is the guiding principle behind the compilation of this series, and we have made efforts in the following areas:
1. Topic Selection: The six volumes represent six key topics. The three volumes on single characters address issues of reading, writing, and usage, while the three volumes on compound words tackle word meaning, similar/synonymous pronunciation and form, as well as easily confused or mistaken words. These six topics are both fundamental and crucial in Chinese language learning.
2. Scope of Entries: The analyzed characters and words are limited to common usage. Single characters are primarily selected from the 2,500 most frequently used characters and 1,000 less frequently used characters, with some general characters also included. Compound words are selected with reference to the findings of lexical measurement research. For example, synonyms are mainly chosen based on data from The Modern Chinese Frequency Dictionary, generally falling within the range of approximately 8,548 common words. Near-homophones are selected with a focus on those that are highly common, have identical or similar pronunciation but different meanings, and are prone to confusion, including dialectal terms that are easily mixed with standard Mandarin pronunciation. For variant forms, the selection and analysis are conducted using a massive corpus of billions of characters, ensuring greater objectivity and accuracy.
3. Presentation of Character and Word Knowledge: Instead of aiming for comprehensiveness, the focus is on analyzing easily confused or mistaken aspects. Most dictionaries and reference books focus on individual characters and words, striving for complete and thorough definitions. However, to achieve a deep and correct understanding and application of a character or word, it is essential to understand its neighboring words and the subtle differences between them, thereby mastering their distinct usages. Providing this information and assistance is precisely what this series of reference books seeks to convey to readers.
4. Definition and Analysis: Plain and accessible language is used as much as possible, striving to make the content "deep yet easy to understand."
