As a contributor to major French and international art magazines, a critic for Art-Libre, Combat, and Le Matin de Paris, and a professor of humanities at the National School of Decorative Arts, he has also published The Epic of Cubism (1964), Three Duchamps (1975), Fragonard (1987), Rembrandt (1991), Mr. Degas (1989), Daumier (1998), and Duchamp and His Contemporaries (1998). Co-authored with Gérard Trudel, he wrote The Little Painters Dictionary, 1820-1920 (1995). His works The Cultural Power of the Fifth Republic (1981) and Who Killed Van Gogh? (1992) both stirred controversy.
