Features: The study of sketching portraits holds a very important position in the entire learning of sketching. Portrait training is one of the key subjects in character sketching. Understanding and familiarizing oneself with the proportion and structure of the human head, as well as its distinctive features, and mastering sketching portraits are essential experiences for every student learning sketching. Since the spiritual appearance and distinctive features of a person are primarily concentrated in the head, the importance of learning sketching portraits is quite evident. In addition to paying attention to the basic concepts of sketching such as the outline, value, proportion, perspective, lines, volume, space, and texture of the subject, students must also be familiar with and master the anatomical knowledge of the head that influences its external shape, as well as the basic proportional relationships of the five senses. These are fundamental and essential knowledge for beginners to systematically grasp the basics and expressive forms of portrait sketching.
Value drawing, line-based drawing, and the combination of line and value are the most commonly used techniques for sketching portraits. Among these, value drawing is the most versatile and is frequently used by students during portrait sketching. Value drawing utilizes the different layers of light and shadow and the variations in clarity to shape and represent the subject. It is relatively easy for beginners to grasp and understand this method, and it also tends to produce immediate results. Line-based drawing pays less attention to light and shadow and focuses more on the expression of structure and the transitions of form. The lines used vary in weight, clarity, and thickness, differing from traditional Chinese ink line drawing but somewhat resembling structural sketching in design. The combination of line and value is a comprehensive technique that integrates both value and lines, often used in sketches.
This book is primarily aimed at students' portrait sketching training, divided into different topics, including a 3/4 side view of a young woman, a front view of a young man, a side view of a young woman, and a side view of an elderly woman. Each topic includes explanations of portrait knowledge, step-by-step demonstrations of drawing techniques, and critiques of outstanding works. The content is detailed and highly instructive, striving to provide students with as much assistance as possible.
