1. Writing Purpose
This textbook provides students with systematic and diverse extracurricular reading materials, aiming to cultivate and improve their English reading skills, expand their knowledge and vocabulary, and thereby enhance their comprehension and appreciation.
2. Overall Structure
The entire series is divided into six volumes, each accompanied by a corresponding teacher's book. Each volume consists of 8 units, with 3 lessons per unit, totaling 24 lessons. Each lesson includes the following sections:
⑴ No Introduction before the text to give students a general impression of the main content and background knowledge of the text. This addresses some difficulties encountered in reading classes while also increasing reading interest.
⑵ Annotations are provided in the margin, listing all words and phrases that may pose reading obstacles, with explanations in Chinese or English. Marginal annotations are used to save time, facilitate reading, and reduce difficulty. Students should be encouraged to guess the meanings of words while reading and consult the annotations only if they cannot. The detailed listing of words and phrases is intended to shift students' focus from language to other aspects, strengthening their overall awareness of the text. Some simple words are not annotated but are included in the Appendix Glossary. Words with the same pronunciation but different meanings are only annotated with phonetic symbols upon their first appearance.
⑶ After the text, there is a "Reading Skill" section, which includes exercises for guessing word meanings based on context and reading skill exercises designed to address the specific difficulties of the lesson. This section is arranged to help students develop a clearer understanding of the text's structure and linguistic features, closely linking vocabulary learning with contextual usage.
⑷ Multiple-choice exercises are designed to deepen students' understanding of the text.
⑸ English-to-Chinese translation exercises are designed to deepen students' understanding of the text.
⑹ Thought questions are designed to train students' analytical and summarizing skills.
