It highlights the characteristics of "adult, part-time, practical" and was recommended by the Ministry of Education as a national planned textbook for adult higher education. After the Third National Education Conference, the situation of educational reform in the country developed rapidly, the scale of adult higher education expanded continuously, and society put forward higher requirements for the quality of adult higher education. Starting from 1998, the Beijing Municipal Education Commission organized experts and professors to write a set of English textbooks, "Modern English Course," specifically designed for the teaching of non-English majors in adult higher education in China. The textbook was compiled by the Adult Education Department of Beijing Foreign Studies University.
