Teaching Syllabus for English Majors in Higher Education

Features: This teaching syllabus was formulated by the English Group of the Advisory Committee on Foreign Language Teaching in Higher Education. Its purpose is to standardize English teaching in English majors across colleges and universities in China. The entire syllabus includes an introduction, the syllabus itself, an explanation of revisions, three appendices (descriptions of professional courses, recommended reading lists for professional students, and some opinions on the reform of undergraduate foreign language education in the 21st century), and a postscript. The provisions made in this syllabus serve as guidance for English majors in various types of higher education institutions in China, as well as a basis for organizing teaching, compiling teaching materials, and assessing teaching quality. In the early 1980s, at the request of the State Education Commission, the English Group of the Textbook Compilation and Review Committee for Foreign Language Teaching in Higher Education began drafting the teaching syllabus for English majors in universities. After the two syllabi for the basic stage and advanced English teaching were reviewed and approved by the English Group of the Textbook Compilation and Review Committee, they were implemented nationwide in the late 1980s and early 1990s, with approval from the Higher Education Department of the State Education Commission. Over the past decade and a half, these two teaching syllabi have played a significant role in standardizing and guiding English teaching in English majors in Chinese higher education. Given the new requirements of the socialist market economy for the cultivation of talents in English majors in higher education, as well as the considerable changes in Chinese language teaching over the past decade, the original two syllabi can no longer meet the new circumstances. Therefore, it is necessary to revise them accordingly.
