Features: Henry James (Henry James, 1843-1916), born into a scholarly family of privilege in New York, was the son of the renowned philosopher and writer, Sr. Henry James. This erudite, refined, and enlightened father ensured his two sons received an excellent education in both America and Europe from a young age. Both sons grew up to become distinguished scholars. The elder son, William James, became a famous philosopher, while the younger son, Henry James, held a significant place in the history of modern American literature. From childhood, Henry James traveled between America and Europe with his father and was equally familiar with both places. The contrast between the culture and lifestyles of American and European high society became a key theme in his early works. Daisy Miller is a typical example of such novels. The plot of Daisy Miller is not complicated: the charming American young man Winterborne has long resided in Europe. In the picturesque Swiss town of Vevey, he meets Daisy Miller, the daughter of an American wealthy merchant. Daisy is young, beautiful, and captivating, deeply enchanting Winterborne. However, this rational and intelligent aristocratic young man, despite his interest in studying women's psychology, cannot fathom Daisy's true thoughts. Later in the ancient city of Rome, these two young people meet again, and Daisy's words and actions only further bewilder Winterborne. It is not a simple "game of hide-and-seek" love story. The name of the novel's female protagonist, Daisy, is the same as the English word for "daisy." In the story, she is also buried among daisies after her death. The author clearly uses this to imply that this daughter of nature, like a wildflower, is beautiful and untamed, and in an environment unsuitable for her, her life fades away like a wildflower. The tone of the novel is light and humorous. While praising the American freedom, democracy, simplicity, and confidence embodied by Daisy, the author also satirizes her narrow-mindedness, lack of knowledge, superficiality, and immaturity. At the same time, while admiring Europe's long history, splendid culture, and aristocratic demeanor, the author mercilessly exposes its sophistication, hypocrisy, conservatism, and corruption. Between the lively and playful words lies profound reflection.
