Features: Yu Hua is a pure novelist. No one is better than him at helping us grasp the history of life within ourselves, from childhood (in Cries in the Drizzle) to adulthood (Xu San's Blood), and then to old age (To Live). His trilogy is a shared human experience. Just as great philosophers summarize all thoughts with one idea, great novelists, through the life of an ordinary person and some common things, bring the lives of everyone to life on the page. Yu Hua was awarded the Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French government in March 2004 for this novel. In your powerful narration, reality and fantasy, the bizarre and the ordinary intertwine. Your dramatic storytelling style presents the plot like a musical composition. You approach the limits of human nature in a unique way, taking readers back to the anxieties and joys of childhood. Yu Hua, I am honored to bestow upon you the Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres. — Jean-Jacques Ayrault, Minister of Culture of France
I think this should be a book about memory. Its structure comes from the perception of time, specifically the perception of known time, that is, the time of memory. This book attempts to express that people have more confidence in the past than in the future. Because the future is full of adventures, full of undefeated mysteries, only when these come to an end do wonder and fear transform into humor and sweetness. This is why people love to reminisce.
My writing is like constantly picking up the phone and dialing a series of unordered dates to listen to the words of past memories from the other end of the film. — Yu Hua
