Does newborn jaundice affect brain MRI?

Patient's question:

My friend's child, a premature baby, was admitted to the ICU right after birth. After coming out, they noticed that the baby's entire body was yellow. The doctors at the hospital recommended an MRI. My friend is unsure if it can be done, and I want to ask if an MRI of the baby's brain for jaundice shows any changes?

Doctor's answer:

Hello, parents, the baby can be tested through magnetic resonance imaging. Severe Kernicterus can affect the baby's intelligence. However, if it is detected early and treated promptly, the jaundice will be milder. Depending on the current level of Kernicterus in the infant and the extent of brain bleeding, current medical conditions usually do not have a particularly significant impact. Magnetic resonance belongs to radiation examination, which has radioactive hazards to the body. However, occasional examinations involve extremely small amounts of radiation exposure, so there is no need to worry.
