Features: Research on contemporary Chinese literature, culture, and art has produced numerous scholarly works. These works offer various introductions and interpretations of contemporary Chinese literature, culture, and art. On one hand, they allow us to appreciate the profound impact of these intellectual achievements on our lifestyles and thought patterns. On the other hand, we remain bewildered, as humanity still lacks clear guidance in these fields, leaving us adrift. The newly released "New Horizons Literary Series" edited by Liu Chengji from Zhengzhou University Press is a theoretical series that examines the current state and development of contemporary literature, culture, and art from a fresh and unique perspective, differing from traditional approaches. This series consists of three volumes: The Chain of Life—A Perspective on the Course of New Period Literature (by Tang Xuezhi), The City of Dreams—A Critical Examination of Contemporary Urban Aesthetic Culture (by Luo Junjun), and The Eternal Vanguard—Reflections and Critiques on Modern Chinese Art (by He Wanli).
From the "Injury Art" and "Stars Art Exhibition" of the late 1970s, to the "1985 Art New Wave" and "1989 Art Exhibition," and then to the popularity of styles like "Pop," "Playful," "Rogue," and "Vulgar" in the 1990s, as well as the emergence of "scandalous" installation and performance art across the 1980s and 1990s, what the public calls "vanguard" modern Chinese art has undergone a "pioneer" journey of promoting ideological liberation and breaking artistic conventions. Along this path, there have been shifts in phenomena, trends in thought, sincere expressions, the influence of fame and fortune, the adaptation to post-colonial contexts, and the pursuit of national identity. There have been internal dialogues within the circle, as well as efforts to engage with the public. This book describes the phenomena, organizes the trends, and presents images of more than two decades of modern Chinese art, clarifying the overall trajectory and conceptual logic of its development. It offers deep reflections and critiques on the many issues that have emerged in the evolution of modern Chinese art. The book is richly illustrated, blending narrative with commentary, and is both accessible and profound. It is not only suitable for art professionals, art enthusiasts, and young students but also provides a valuable perspective for the literary and artistic community seeking to understand and contemplate modern Chinese art phenomena.
