These collections were once used as teaching materials or reference materials for the Chinese Department of Tsinghua University. The collection "Selections on Literary Criticism," included in this volume, is a renowned collection of classical Chinese literary theory. It ranges from ancient works like the "Preface to the Book of Songs" and Cao Pi's "Discourse on Literature" to modern works such as Zhang Taiyan's "Discourse on National Studies: Brief on Literature." It includes comprehensive discussions on both poetry and prose, totaling 54 essays. The second collection, "Biographical Notes on Ancient and Modern Poems," selects famous poems or poets from the Han Dynasty to the Song Dynasty in China. It compiles introductions, interpretations, critiques, or research insights from ancient and modern scholars, listing them separately. The third collection, "Ballads and Folk Songs," in addition to including the "Preface" from the book "Ancient Ballads and Proverbs" and abstracts of Guo Shaoyu's research papers on ballads, explains the definition of ballads, the distinction between ballads and proverbs, the classification and origins of ballads. Moreover, the author has compiled "Examples of Ballads and Folk Songs," including over 140 ballads and related materials. At the end of this volume, as an appendix, are collected eulogies, poems, and condolence telegrams from various parties on August 12, 1948, the day of the author's death.
