Features: The Chunqiu Fanlu by Dong Zhongshu of the Han Dynasty is a work that explains the subtle meanings of the Chunqiu. A more complete annotated edition only appeared in the Qing Dynasty with the Chunqiu Fanlu annotated by Lu Wenchang and the Chunqiu Fanlu annotated by Ling Shu. During the Xuantong era, Su You of Suzhou combined Lu's annotations and Ling's notes, along with previous research, to compile the Chunqiu Fanlu Yizheng. This Chunqiu Fanlu Translated and Annotated uses Lu's edition as the base text and references the Yizheng for annotations. The punctuation is mostly based on Zhong Zhe's edition, with some modifications made according to the author's understanding. The principles of this translated and annotated edition are:
1. Annotations are kept concise. Since there is a translation following it, the annotations aim to be brief. There are many historical events mentioned in the text, and if each is annotated in detail, it may dilute the original work. Therefore, annotations are generally omitted, and readers who wish to gain a deeper understanding can refer to the Chunqiu and the Three Commentaries.
2. The translation adopts a literal approach, but when literal translation fails to convey the meaning effectively, a combination of literal and free translation is used.
