Features: Zhao Shi (1874–1933), also known as Gu Yu, styled Shi Nong, and later as Ni Dao Ren, was born in Xitang City, Western Township, Changshu County, Jiangsu Province. His family was poor, and from a young age, he served as an apprentice in a pharmacy in Jin Village under his father. In his spare time, he was deeply fond of calligraphy and seal carving. He once studied under Mr. Li Yuzhang of the town, learning diligently and gaining guidance, which allowed him to grasp the fundamentals. At the age of twenty, he worked for Shen Shiyou, treating seals and carving inkstones, where he had access to Shen’s collection and his skills improved daily. Wu Changshuo and Shen Shiyou were close friends, and Wu often visited Shen’s residence. Seeing Gu Ni’s dedication and talent at a young age, he said, "This young man should rise to prominence." Wu accepted Gu Ni as his disciple, teaching him the key techniques. Under his guidance, Gu Ni advanced rapidly, and his artistry flourished dramatically. In middle age, his style of seal carving changed, and he eventually became a renowned master. The "Yushan School" he created became highly influential in the field of seal carving, spreading widely and earning him the reputation of "Southern Wu and Northern Zhao" at the time.
