Publishing Date: 2005-09-01
Features: Compiled as a collection of popular opera plays under the name "Zhuibaiqiu," it originated from the late Ming Dynasty, when the Suzhou scholar "Wan Huazhuren" had previously edited such collections. After the Qing Dynasty, this trend flourished. However, these selected works only included Kunqu opera plays from the late Ming and early Qing periods, with excerpts from Yuan Dynasty zaju and Ming-Qing chuanqi, but did not include Huabu luan tan plays. In the 28th year of the Qianlong reign (1763), Qian Dechang, the owner of the Suzhou Baoren Tang bookstore, adopted the old name "Zhuibaiqiu" to begin compiling new popular plays. The following year, he published "Shixing Yada Zhuibaiqiu Xinji Chu Bian." Thereafter, one or two volumes were published annually until the 39th year of the Qianlong reign (1774), when twelve volumes were completed and published together as the Baoren Tang edition. Due to its practical nature as a songbook and convenient use, it became extremely popular, with almost everyone in the theater owning a copy and having a significant impact. In 1931, under the support and guidance of Mr. Hu Shi, Ms. Wang Xiuru completed the proofreading and collation of Zhuibaiqiu based on the four classroom edition. In December 1940, the Zhonghua Book Company published it in lead type printing, with Mr. Hu Shi writing the preface. This is known as the Wang edition.
