Features: Since the publication of The Cihai (1999 edition), it has been warmly welcomed by a broad readership. The Cihai is a comprehensive dictionary on a large scale, with its lexical section comparable to a medium to large-sized Chinese dictionary. The single characters, compound words, idioms, and allusions it collects have long been frequently sought after by readers while reading. Its selection of words and entries covers both ancient and modern times, with an extremely wide range. Its explanations primarily introduce the usage, origins, and evolution of words and provide illustrative examples. In the Lexical Section of the 79th and 89th editions of The Cihai, the Lexical Section had the highest circulation, having already exceeded one million copies. Now, in response to the requests of the readers, we have compiled and published the lexical section of the 1999 edition of The Cihai, and have made efforts to add new entries, correct errors, fill in gaps, update content, refine wording, and enrich basic knowledge. At the same time, we have broken the traditional radical-based arrangement and switched to arranging all entries in pinyin order to meet the needs of readers for quick reference. The compilation and publication of The Cihai·Lexical Section are the result of years of collaborative effort by experts and scholars from Shanghai, Nanjing, Hangzhou, Beijing, and other places involved in this work. It is the crystallization of the wisdom of scholars and reflects the latest achievements in academic research in the field of Chinese language and literature.
