Is newborn jaundice of 8.1 normal?

Patient's question:

My child was just born. This child has recently developed jaundice. The jaundice level is 8.1, and the doctor has requested treatment and observation. I am very worried, so I would like to consult and ask if a newborn jaundice level of 8.1 is normal?

Doctor's answer:

Neonatal jaundice usually appears around 3 days after birth and disappears after about 2 weeks. A bilirubin level below 12 in infants through transcutaneous bilirubin measurement is normal. If your child is now 12 years old, this value is not too high. It is recommended that you can give your child some probiotics and expose them to appropriate sunlight. Check the jaundice level again after three days. If it continues to increase, consider giving your child jaundice medication or blue light treatment to lighten the jaundice.
