Publish Date: 2002-07-01
Features: This book is a large collection of legendary fiction from the two major periods of the Tang Five Dynasties (618-960) and the Northern and Southern Song (960-1279), spanning over 660 years. It includes approximately 80 individual legendary works and over 70 specialized collections, totaling more than 400 pieces. In addition to anonymous authors, it features more than 110 writers. The book adheres to strict selection criteria. All included works are renowned masterpieces found in important ancient classics such as Taiping Guangji and a few quasi-legendary works that bridge the gap between legendary fiction and note-taking fiction. The editorial style largely follows the formats of Lu Xun's Tang and Song Legendary Collections and Wang Pijiang's Tang Dynasty Fiction, with some modifications. The entire book is organized into two categories—individual works and collections—following the original structure of ancient texts, arranged chronologically. Each piece consists of five parts: introduction, main text, appendices, annotations, and translations.
