Features: A Collection of Essays on Learning and Thinking is a series of research-based essays on cultural issues written by the renowned scholar Zhou Youguang after he turned 85, with a few pieces being new works composed by him after his 100th birthday. These articles are characterized by fresh and enduring prose, original arguments, and have garnered significant attention from academia.
Following the end of the Cultural Revolution (1966–1976), the rectification of chaos and the reform and opening-up led Chinese scholars to reassess and evaluate traditional Chinese culture. After the dissolution of the Soviet Union (1991 onwards), Russian scholars renewed their study of Soviet history and Marxism, seeking to understand the history of social development from the depths of cultural backgrounds. Since the September 11 (2001) attacks in the United States, scholars in America and Western Europe have discussed the new developments in the world situation, exploring cultural divides and conflicts from the perspective of global cultural dynamics.
In this cultural boom, Zhou Youguang, in his advanced years, extensively read works on culture both within and outside China, summarizing his reading notes and writing accessible articles to engage in discussions with young readers. Zhou pointed out that after the early cultures of the Yellow River and Nile basins disappeared on the Eurasian continent, multiple cultural cradles converged to form four regional traditional cultures: Western European culture, Western Asian culture, South Asian culture, and East Asian culture. Western European culture spread to the Americas and became known as Western culture. The three Asian cultures are collectively referred to as Eastern culture. East Asian culture is a variant of Eastern culture.
In the era of globalization, regional traditional cultures have come into contact and learned from one another, with their essence having coalesced into an international modern culture that transcends regions and borders. This is a "co-created, co-owned, and co-shared" culture for all humanity. In its early stages, Western Europe made greater contributions, but later, other regional cultures also increasingly contributed. Humanity has entered an era of dual transformation—living in international modernization while preserving, organizing, and improving traditional cultures. International modern culture is the mainstream, rapidly developing, and covering the globe. The development processes of different countries vary in timing, but those that fall behind will eventually catch up with the advanced. It is impossible to cling to the old ways and remain unchanging in the face of change. This is the law of cultural development.
Reading these articles, one can see the depth and rigor of Zhou’s thinking and research on human culture. Reflecting on the laws of cultural development can help us gain a clear understanding of Chinese culture—neither unduly self-important nor self-effacing. It is hoped that the publication of this book will spark the interest of young readers in understanding and contemplating cultural issues.
