The problem of defining the history of Chinese modern literature has always been one of the major bottlenecks restricting the healthy development of this discipline. To date, no author of a History of Chinese Modern Literature has been able to accurately explain what "Chinese modern literature" is as a fundamental academic concept, which undoubtedly reflects the discipline's lack of confidence. Precisely for this reason, a comprehensive review and scientific examination of the "modernity" of 20th-century Chinese literature is particularly important. Therefore, "modernity" is by no means a purely metaphysical concept, but a concrete practice in the history of literature; it follows universal value standards rather than being confined to a national self-evaluation system. This book will demonstrate personal views on the objective laws of the development of Chinese modern literature from the following three main aspects and hope to attract the attention and academic debate of scholars.
1. The Dilemma and Anxiety of Modernity: Macroscopic Description of the Laws of the Chinese Modern Cultural Movement
2. The Dilemma and Anxiety of Modernity: Periodized Analysis of Historical Transformations in Chinese Modern Literature
3. Questioning Modernity: The Modern Literary Significance of Individual Writers as Phenomena
Through the above arguments, we can draw the following conclusions: From a macroscopic perspective, Chinese modern literature is a non-aesthetic literary phenomenon that lacks modern characteristics; from a periodized analysis perspective, Chinese modern intellectuals severely misinterpreted the humanistic spirit of the West due to their own modernity anxiety; from an individual perspective, the radical emotions expressed by Chinese modern writers reflect the contradictory duality of tradition and modernity. Therefore, I believe that 20th-century Chinese literature is not truly modern literature; it is striving to achieve "modernity" rather than already possessing it. If we are blindly optimistic and self-conceited, we will isolate ourselves from the world of modern literature.
