Shilin Scenic Area is located in Shilin Yi Autonomous County, Kunming City, Yunnan Province, about 78 kilometers from the downtown area of Kunming. It is a national 5A-level tourist attraction, a UNESCO Global Geopark, and a World Natural Heritage site. With a total area of 350 square kilometers and a core scenic area of about 30 square kilometers, it features unique karst landforms formed 270 million years ago, making it a rare geological wonder in China and the world. Centered on the stone forest landscape known for its "majesty, wonder, steepness, elegance, and tranquility," the scenic area integrates natural sightseeing, ethnic cultural experiences, and science education. It mainly includes the Greater Stone Forest, Lesser Stone Forest, Ten-Thousand-Year Lingzhi, and Liziyuanqing areas, and is hailed as "the finest wonder under heaven."
History and Culture
Shilin Scenic Area is the homeland of the Sani people, a branch of the Yi ethnic group, and boasts a profound ethnic cultural heritage. The Sani people have created oral traditions represented by "Ashima," as well as folk activities such as wrestling and the Grand Sanxian dance. The epic Ashima has been inscribed on the National Intangible Cultural Heritage List. The "Shilin Shengjing" stone inscription in the scenic area was written in 1733 by Wang Rizao, a provincial graduate and magistrate of Lunan Prefecture during the Qing Dynasty, and is a landmark cultural landscape of Shilin. In addition, Shilin was once an important area of activity for the ancient Dian Kingdom. Archaeological discoveries prove that humans lived here as early as the Neolithic Age, and ancient cliff paintings, ancient buildings, and other relics are still preserved today.
Major Attractions
Greater Stone Forest
The Greater Stone Forest is the core area of Shilin Scenic Area, covering about 12 square kilometers and known for its dense clusters of stone peaks. The stone peaks here tower high, with the tallest reaching 40 meters, and take on various shapes. Attractions such as "Lotus Peak," "Sword Peak Pool," and "Hanging by a Thread" are remarkably lifelike. The famous "Shilin Shengjing" stone inscription is located at the entrance of the Greater Stone Forest, and "Wangfeng Pavilion" is the best spot to overlook the panorama of the Greater Stone Forest. Standing on the pavilion and gazing into the distance, thousands of stone peaks stand like spears and halberds in a magnificent scene.
Lesser Stone Forest
Adjacent to the Greater Stone Forest, the Lesser Stone Forest covers about 5 square kilometers and is dominated by exquisite, delicate, fresh, and elegant stone peaks. Its most famous attraction is the "Ashima Stone," a stone peak about 20 meters high that resembles a Sani maiden carrying a bamboo basket and standing gracefully. It is the incarnation of the beautiful goddess in the hearts of the Sani people. The Lesser Stone Forest also includes attractions such as "Lovers' Stone" and "Secluded Pool." The environment is quiet and serene, making it suitable for strolling and resting.
Ten-Thousand-Year Lingzhi
The Ten-Thousand-Year Lingzhi area is named after stone peaks that resemble lingzhi mushrooms, covering about 10 square kilometers. The surfaces of the stone peaks here are black and have unique textures, as if they were enormous lingzhi mushroom caps. The largest "Lingzhi Stone" is about 15 meters high and about 30 meters in circumference at its base. The area also includes landscapes such as "Ancient Castle" and "Elephants Descending the Mountain," showcasing the diversity of karst landforms.
Liziyuanqing
Liziyuanqing is one of the oldest areas in Shilin Scenic Area, formed 270 million years ago, covering about 8 square kilometers. The stone peaks here are low and densely packed, with surface coverage of over 80%, forming a unique "stone sea" landscape. Because it is rarely visited, it preserves the primitive karst ecology and is an ideal place for geological research and hiking adventures.
