Li Lin's original name was Li Yaolin, and he was the older brother of Ba Jin (Li Yaotang). In his essay In Memory of My Brother, Ba Jin said of Li Lin: "You were a middle school teacher for ten years, and many students benefited from you. They often spoke of you with reverence, but you preferred a humble and ordinary life and never allowed others to see you as a mentor for the youth. You were like a matchstick, bringing light and warmth to some people, while yourself being humbly consumed. Although you lived a life of obscurity, you did not live in vain. You quietly came into this world and quietly left it. You did not wish to disturb others, but you sowed seeds of love. Even after forty more years, your commemoration will not fade." Ba Jin praised Li Lin's translation of The Cliff as a masterpiece of translation.
