By agreement with the United Nations, the Republic of C?te d'Ivoire was renamed the Republic of C?te d'Ivoire on January 1, 1986. With a land area of 322,463 square kilometers and a population of 15 million (1998), C?te d'Ivoire became a French colony in 1893. After gaining independence in 1960, the country has maintained relatively stable politics, although political democratization in the 1990s led to some turmoil. Economically, national economy has achieved comprehensive development, earning it the reputation of "the showcase of West Africa" and "a model of African success." Significant progress has been made in education, science and technology, and literature and arts. C?te d'Ivoire established diplomatic relations with China in 1983, and in recent years, friendly cooperation between the two sides has continuously expanded and deepened in various fields such as politics, economy, and trade.
