In Bohemian fiction, the protagonists are often from impoverished backgrounds, some being orphans or illegitimate children, with often tragic childhood and youth. In their early years, they generally retain innocent, lovable, and compassionate traits. However, once they leave their families and embrace society, they struggle to adapt. To survive, they are forced to learn flattery, scheming, lying, and deception. Many of them eventually become assimilated by society, turning into degenerates or shameless scoundrels. In other words, typical Bohemian fiction—especially in longer forms—often portrays the protagonists' adaptation to society, or their transformation from purity to corruption.
Bohemian fiction protagonists typically adopt a cynical and playful attitude toward life. They find it difficult to face life with seriousness or earnestness, as such an approach would hinder their survival. Their most notable characteristics are alertness, quick-wittedness, and an indomitable ability to survive and adapt. Little Beggars () is a particularly cunning figure. The Bohemian fiction's blending of character portrayal with social reflection holds significant importance for the development of European fiction.
