Features: Compared to Studies on Function Words in the Zuo Zhuan (1989), this book has the following changes:
1. Over the decade since the publication of Studies on Function Words in the Zuo Zhuan, readers have provided many valuable suggestions, and I myself have identified areas for revision. This edition has made every effort to delete and correct them.
2. Articles written in recent years on several important function words have been included in this book. As a result, almost all significant and representative function words in each category of the Zuo Zhuan are discussed in this book. The overall goal is to gradually make this book more through my efforts. These articles are: "The Modal Word 'Ye' in the Zuo Zhuan," "The Conjunction 'Er' in the Zuo Zhuan," "The Adverb 'Jie' in the Zuo Zhuan," and another one titled "The Historical Evolution of 'Fu'." Although 'Fu' is not a very common negative adverb, it is thought-provoking. Although this article is not solely about the Zuo Zhuan, it uses the 'Fu' in the Zuo Zhuan as an important basis for the pre-Qin period. The changes of 'Fu' in the pre-Qin period also occupy a significant position in the historical evolution of 'Fu.' Therefore, this article has been included in this book, and important references related to 'Fu' have been appended for reference.
3. Several articles in the original book that were closely related to sentence patterns (The Passive Sentence Patterns and Function Words in the Zuo Zhuan, The Comparative Sentence Patterns and Function Words in the Zuo Zhuan, The Special Sentence Patterns and Function Words in the Zuo Zhuan) have been extracted from this book and placed in A Study on Simple and Complex Sentence Grammar in the Zuo Zhuan (to be published by Henan University Press). The glossary of technical terms appended at the end of the original book has been removed due to its limited utility. Most of the articles in this book were written in the 1960s, when handwritten index cards were the primary means of accumulating data and statistical analysis. Compared to today's computer-based statistical data, there may be discrepancies, but overall, they can still serve as a reference. This is specially noted, and understanding is appreciated.
