Brief Introduction to Love of Life
Jack London (1876–1916) was a prolific writer who, in his brief 40-year life, created a vast body of work, holding an important place in the history of American literature. Born into a poor farming family and lacking formal education, London relied solely on his own efforts to succeed. His novels are characterized by concise prose, focused plots, vivid details, and characters often drawn from lower social strata. These characters embody resilience and perseverance, embodying the "tough guy" archetype capable of enduring hardship and overcoming adversity.
The protagonist of Love of Life is such a "tough guy." The story follows a gold prospector who, after being injured, is abandoned by his companions. Despite enduring hunger and cold in isolation, he never gives up hope for survival and struggles against a wolf, ultimately defeating death.
The Call of the Wild depicts a dog named Buck, who is stolen by gardener Manuel and subjected to abuse. After being rescued and meeting a new master, he constantly struggles between his loyalty to his owner and the primal instincts stirring within him. After his owner is killed, Buck eventually succumbs to the call of the wolf pack, reawakening his wild nature and ultimately transforming into a wolf.
