The orphan Pip is raised by the honest blacksmith Joe, and later falls in love with the adopted daughter of the noble Miss Havisham, Estella. An anonymous benefactor funds Pip, allowing him to receive a "gentleman's" education. Pip believes this is Miss Havisham's way of arranging his marriage to Estella. Later, Pip discovers that his benefactor is a convict he helped as a child. The convict escapes back to the country and is captured. Estella also marries someone else. Pip's "great expectations" turn into a dream. Over a decade later, Pip reunites with the widowed Estella, and they finally hold hands.
